Hey there! :)

Dear Moderator,

Welcome to my AS media blog! I've created a rock music magazine cover, contents page and double page spread and this is my blog to show you the finished magazine as well as all the research and planning I put into making my magazine and the evaluation I did after I completed my magazine. I hope you find it all interesting! :)

Below are links to my research and planning, completed magazine and evaluation questions.

Research and Planning - College Magazine Evaluation

After creating my College Magazine cover and contents page, I found both things I like and dislike about them.

I particularly like the way the medium close up image looks on the cover, as it suits the college theme of the magazine and seems to fit nicely in the white space left in the centre of the page and the edges of the image look smooth even though I cut the image out, by hand on photoshop, from its background. I also like the way my Magazine cover appears to be different to everyone elses, I didn't just use an image and put text over it to create the cover like some people did, I created boxes and a set layout to make it look unique. I also really like the way my 'Autumn Term' banner turned out, as it nicely cuts the image off at the correct point to make it a medium close up, without looking out of place. I like the way the information is set out on my contents page, as its not all linear and boring, its creatively layed out and interesting.

However, I dislike how the background of the boxes, which the articles are in, looks pink. I wanted to make a clear distinction between the outline of the boxes and the fill colour of the boxes and so I used the same red colour and changed the opacity for the background to make the distinction I wanted. But unfortunately the change in opacity left the background looking more pink than red, which I'm not too happy about as I wanted the colour scheme to be red and white, not red, white and pink. I dislike the background colour of the contents page, as it's too bold and hard to look at after a while.

If I could do this cover again and improve it, I would switch the colours around so that everything that appears white on my page would be red and everything that appears red would be white, just to make the magazine look a little more colourful and not as bland/dull. I would also find a different font to use rather than 'All Star' as although it suits the style of a College magazine, I'm not entirely happy with the way it looks on my cover. If I could change my contents page I would make the red on the background softer, or swap the colours around so that red become white and white becomes red, to make everything easier to look at and read.

I feel that the font sizes on my front cover are appropriate, as the mastead is in the largest font, the articles titles in the next largest font and other information on the page in a smaller font. However the artcle text sizes are inconsistent as I sized them to fit the boxes, rather than kept all the text the same size.

I do believe that my cover and contents page follows the three colour rule as the colours used are white and two shades of red.

I personally think the photograph on the cover was well taken, as it appears to look good and is angled slightly downwards, rather than head on, to make it look cuter which suits the pose my model is doing. Plus its appropriate as she is a college student and her age and dress clearly shows this.

There are 6 articles advertised on the cover of my magazine, all relating to teenage and college life to entice my target audience of college students to buy the magazine. Inside the magazine, on the contents page, there are 12 titles of articles, including the 6 on the cover, which are also all related to teenage and college life, which again appeals to my target audience of teenagers.

Over all I am happy with the way my College Magazine and Contents page turned out and I feel confident in identifying the areas of the magazine which need changing and improving, which will help me when making my Music Magazine.

Research and Planning - Completed Magazine Cover & Contents Page

This is my finished College Magazine cover which I made in Photoshop. I tried to stick to my plan as closely as possible and I am pleasantly surprised with my result!

This is the finished mock up of my College Magazine Contents Page which I created in InDesign.

Research and Planning - Pictures taken for my College Magazine

I took these pictures for the front cover of my college magazine. I used two of my friends as the models, as I couldn't decide if a boy or a girl on the front of my magazine cover would have looked better. Some of these pictures need cropping to become medium close ups, which was the shot type we were to use on our college magazine covers.

Research and Planning - Font Styles

After being given three magazine titles (Death Metal, Popcorn & Pop World) I had to find fonts which suited the words. I used http://www.dafont.com/ & http://www.fonts.com/ to find suitable font styles for the magazine titles.

Death Metal - I chose this font for Death Metal because it looks like the font used in the AC/DC rock band logo, which is associated with rock/metal music. The sharp points of the text lends its self nicely to the metal style of music which is sharp and edgy in sound.

Popcorn - I chose this font for Popcorn because it is rounded, like popcorn, a little irratic, like popcorn when it pops and it just seems to suit the word popcorn.
Pop World - I chose this font for Pop World because it's rounded, smooth and a little bit funky, just like Pop music its self.

Research and Planning - College Magazine Draft

These are my paper drafts of my College Magazine, which I have started to make in Photoshop and In Design.

Research and Planning - College magazine progress 2

This is my progress so far. I have now almost finished my college magazine cover, all it is missing is the medium close up image. I have finished the mock up of my contents page and just need to label all the different areas of it.

Research and Planning - College magazine interviews

To get a better idea of what to include on the front cover of my college magazine, I prepared a list of questions and interviewed students and staff at the college. The videos above give an insight into some of the replies I gained. I interviewed people so that I could include relevant information and articles on my magazine cover which would appeal to people who actually attend the college and are my target audience.

One of the key questions I asked was what peoples favourite colours were, as my entire college magazine colour scheme depends upon their responses and the colours used are what draw people to the magazine in the first place.

Other key information I obtained:

-Things that interest college students and staff
-Hobbies students and staff have
-Things students and staff would be interested in reading about
-How much a student would pay for such a magazine
-What magazines they already buy and what makes those magazines appeal to them

I can use all this knowledge to ensure that my college magazine stands the best chance of appealing to as many students as possible.

Target Audience

The specific target audience for my College magazine is students between the age of 16-20 who attend Hyde Clarendon College. My target audience is non gender specific and is everyone who attends the College, not just A Level or vocational students.

Research and Planning - Medium Close Up examles

Examples of medium close up images:

A medium close up is a picture, or film shot which captures both the head and shoulders.

Research and Planning - College Magazine Analysis

College magazine analysis:

-I can tell this is a magazine because it has a Masthead, a slugline, a date and issue number,  a main picture, bar code and price, as well as a variety of featured articles presented on the front cover, which are all essential parts of a magazine cover.
-I can tell this is specifically a college magazine as the person presented on the front cover is the age of a typical college student and she is also dressed like a student in casual clothing.
-I can also tell this is a college magazine, as the articles featured on the front cover are relevant to college life and the Masthead clearly says 'College'.
-I believe that this college magazine is aimed at students between the age of 16 to 18, as that is the typical age of college students and those ages would be interested in the types of articles presented in the magazine and primarily aimed at females, as there is a female on the cover and the articles seem to lean towards the female gender and their concerns and interests.
-This is a typical magazine as it has a simple, but effective, 'three colour' colour scheme, which ensures the cover of the magazine does not look manic and is not full of random colours which does not look professional and may put people off reading it.

Planning and design - In Design Movie Review

This is my first attempt at using In Design. I created this Harry Potter movie review by opening In Design and setting some page guidelines to make my page appear more like a newspaper article layout. I then copied a Harry Potter film review off the internet and pasted it into a word document. I then saved this document and opened it in In Design. I then used the brush tool to decide where I wanted my text to go on the page within the guide lines I had set. I then did the same with a relevant image. I added a title and changed the background colour to finish off my movie review.

Planning and design - Movie Poster

By using Photoshop I created this movie poster. I created it by using a high resolution camera to take photos of myself and my friend in the poses of the original people on the poster. After transferring the image files from the camera to the computer, I opened them in photoshop along with the original movie poster. I then cut out the faces from the pictures of me and my friend and then placed them over the top of the original movie poster faces. By changing the size and rotation of the face images, I managed to cover the original faces on the poster. I then used the blur tool to blend the edges of the faces and the movie poster together, to make the faces look more like they belong there and have not just been cut and pasted.

I definitely enjoyed making this, as well as learning a lot of new techniques to use in Photoshop!

Research and Planning - Photoshop Challenge

This is my third attempt at using photoshop and is the result of the 'Photoshop Challenge'. What I had to do:

-Open up a A4 document to work on. I did this by opening up Photoshop, selecting File and New, then changing the settings to A4.
-Write text 'AS Media Studies' in century gothic in size 24 font. I did this by using the text tool and changing the font and size settings in the text tool bar.
-Change the colour of the text to red and centre it in the middle of the page. I did this by changing the colour in the text toolbar and using the move tool to centralise the text.
-Change the background colour to blue. I did this using the rectangle tool.
-Highlight the text and give it a drop shadow. I did this by opening the layer options and changing the relevant settings.
-Place a picture of a person from the computer/internet under the text. I did this by opening an existing image of a girl in photoshop and dragging and dropping it onto the background layer. I then resized it and used the move tool to place it below the text.
-Change their hair colour. I did this by using the brush tool on a low opacity.
-Draw a border of any colour or shape around the picture. I did this with the rectangle tool.

I'm feeling more confident using Photoshop now, as I seem to be able to navigate around it more easily and quickly.

Research and Planning - skin tutorial

This is my second time of using Photoshop. In the skin tutorial I used the 'spot healer' tool to remove any visible spots from the image, as well as smooth the skin around the area of the spots. I duplicated the image and blurred the image a little, making the skin appear incredibly smooth. I then decreased the opacity of the duplicate image so that the over all image made the person's skin appear much smoother than it had been before. Using the brush tool, on a low opacity of around 25, I added lipstick, blusher, eye shadow and changed the colour of her hair to enhance the image as a whole. This was my first attempt at photo editing and enhancing on Photoshop.

Research and Planning - CD cover AS Media

This is my first creation in Photoshop. I created this CD cover by opening up three separate images in Photoshop and putting them all together. The 'putting them all together' stage consisted of cutting out the CD from it's background and moving it onto the background layer with the notes on. I then changed the size and rotation of the CD image, before tinting it purple and placing it in the top left corner of the square background image. I then removed the horn from its background by using the magic wand tool, which identified all of the background, then used the 'invert' tool, which selected the horn its self, rather than the background, so that I could move it onto my background image. Once the horn was on the background image, I changed the size of it and the rotation of it, as well as changing the colour of the horn using the colour balance to make it look more 'brass like'. I then placed the horn in the center of the CD pointing to the right, as I felt it looked creative. I then added notes onto the background image which appeared to be coming from the horn instrument. After changing the appearance and position of the images, I changed the colour of the background image to match the CD image (giving it a more professional look), before using the wave effect tool to enhance the appearance of the background image. I then added text in a colour that matched both the CD image and the background, giving the CD a title and an artist name - completing the CD cover.
